About
Horizon Maraba Washing Station is nestled in the hills of Southern Rwandan, close to bordering Burundi. The station is owned by Fidel Ndagijima in partnership with Rwanda Trading Company (RTC). Fidel’s mission is to provide essential support to the local farming community, who he has been rebuilding trust with since he purchased the station in 2023 after several years of inactivity for the station.
Since his purchase of the station, Fidel has spent time renovating the mill and working on improving processing and handling. This year, he has established a nursery to distribute 20,000 coffee seedlings, and has plans to provide agronomy training to the farmers supplying the station to further improve the quality of the cherries.
Rwanda Trading Company was established in 2009 with the goal of fostering positive social change, focusing on providing economic freedom and security for smallholder farmers. RTC is responsible for around a quarter of all Rwandan coffees, and the majority of it is fully traceable to the farmers.
Thanks to the region’s high altitude and longstanding coffee growing traditions within the community, Horizon Maraba Washing Station is renowned for producing some of Rwanda’s finest coffees.
The Variety
In 1859, Bourbon seeds arrived in Brazil, sent for by the Brazil central government after hearing that coffee growing on the island of Reunion, then called Bourbon, were more productive and of higher quality than the Typica variety. Now that the Yellow Bourbon variety exists, the original Bourbon is distinguished as Red Bourbon. In the 1930’s, different strains of Red Bourbon were bred at the Campinas Agronomic Institute (IAC) in the state of Sao Paulo and distributed to farmers in 1939. Studying the success of different selections of Red Bourbon planted in different regions with distinct conditions helped researchers understand the effects of environmental variations on coffee varieties.
As one of the main varieties grown in Rwanda, it is recognised for its complex and full-bodied profile with bright acidity and sweetness.
